Let’s talk bridesmaid dress lead times. This is something that comes up alllll the time here, and in many appointments is one of the most important factors to consider.
Many brides start their bridesmaid dress shopping about 6 months before the wedding. This should be plenty of time right? Well, not necessarily. Let me explain why.
Why are bridesmaid dress lead times so long???
You see, bridesmaid dresses are all made to order. Unless you are ordering something online (which generally would only be available in a handful of colours), your bridesmaid dresses will be made just for you, in your choice of fabric and colour, in the factory.
This means that bridesmaid dress lead times may run anywhere from 6 weeks all the way up to 16 weeks. I know: crazy right?? But unfortunately it’s true. Your order will be put in a queue with thousands of other orders which are all cut one by one from your specific colour. You know how fab it is that you can get your bridesmaid dresses in that EXACT shade of sage green? Not mint green, not pistachio, not celadon, but that gorgeous dusky sage green. Well, that is the reason why it can take up to 16 weeks for your bridesmaid dresses to be made.
You see, your typical dress manufacturer (for example the brands that supply Asos, John Lewis etc.) will make one dress style in one colour. They will make hundreds, if not thousands of that one dress in that one colour, in a range of sizes. So you can order from Asos, and your dress will be picked from a warehouse and delivered to your door in a day or two. But if you want that dress in a colour that vaguely matches your colour scheme, tough luck.
So there you have it. That’s the reason why bridesmaid dress lead times can be so long. But that’s also the reason why these brands are so awesome – literally being able to choose from hundreds of colour to find the exact shade you want. What more could a bride ask for?
