So, how long does it take to order a wedding dress? This is such a common question, and one that causes much confusion! Some wedding dress shops will tell you it takes a minimum of 6 months. And scare the be-jeezus out of any poor brides who dare to have an engagement shorter than that! So we thought it would be helpful to clear up some of the confusion!
So, how long does it take to order a wedding dress?
The simple answer is typically about 4 months. There can be quite a lot of variation between designers, but our typical order-paid-to-ship-date is about 16-18 weeks. Now this does not mean you can count back 4 months from your wedding date and set that as the latest date you can order your dress. You will set yourself up for a month of extreme stress and anxiety, calling your dress shop every single day to see if your dress has arrived.
You’ll also find many wedding dress shops won’t accept an order on such a short time frame. We hate anxiety as much as anyone, and if we think your dates are just too tight, we will tell you so and make some other suggestions.
How long should you allow for ordering your wedding dress?
Now this is a different question. And the best way to do this is to work backwards. You want to allow at least 4 weeks before your wedding date for alterations. You also want to allow at least another 4 weeks before this to account for any issues, shipping delays etc. (shipments during the early part of 2020 were delayed due to COVID and there was absolutely nothing any designers could do about this). And then you want to allow the standard 4 months for lead times.
Does it actually take 4 months for my dress to be made?
No, of course not. However, every single wedding dress on order with the designer will be made to order. This means the colour, pattern and size will be unique. The manufacturers are therefor managing a very large order book, and they work through one order at a time. So yours gets placed into the queue and created in that order.
What if I need my dress sooner?
If you simply can’t wait 6 months, there are still lots of options open to you.
- Choose a dress from a sample sale. This is a total win-win, cause you get a gorgeous dress at a heavy discount, and can literally take it home with you that day.
- Pay a rush fee. Most designers will offer a rush service, which will typically shave about 4 weeks off their standard lead times. You can also choose to cut your comfort zone a little and arrange for your alterations to be done faster than the 4 weeks. If you’re going down this route, we highly recommend getting your seamstress lined up ahead of time so they know you will be coming and know your timeframes.
- Choose a Bianco Evento dress. These gorgeous dresses from a leading German designer offer typically much faster lead times, and can be with us in as little as 1 month.
